"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. A host of celebrated supporters have also coveted the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos often feature them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to start a band."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the next part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The band have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound confidence called for a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global fan base.

Yet the band will always be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
