RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
