Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
